First Reading : Daniel 9:4‐10

O Lord, God great and to be feared, you keep the covenant and have kindness for those who love you and keep your commandments: we have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly, we have betrayed your commandments and your ordinances and turned away from them. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our ancestors, and to all the people of the land. Integrity, Lord, is yours; ours the look of shame we wear today, we, the people of Judah, the citizens of Jerusalem, the whole of Israel, near and far away, in every country to which you have dispersed us because of the treason we have committed against you. To us, Lord, the look of shame belongs, to our kings, our princes, our ancestors, because we have sinned against you. To the Lord our God mercy and pardon belong, because we have betrayed him, and have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God nor followed the laws he has given us through his servants the prophets.

(61. Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?

62. What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?

63. 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

64. 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believe and who was to betray him.

65. He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'

66. After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.

67. Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'

68. Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,

69. and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'

70. Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'

71. He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betray him).

Gospel : Luke 6:36‐38

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged yourselves; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned yourselves; grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap; because the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back.’

Words of the Holy Father:

“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (v. 36). It is not a catchphrase, but a life commitment. (…) If we look at the history of salvation, we see that the whole of God’s revelation is an unceasing and untiring love for mankind: God is like a father or mother who loves with an unfathomable love and pours it out abundantly on every creature. Jesus’ death on the Cross is the culmination of the love story between God and man. A love so great that God alone can understand it. It is clear that, compared to this immeasurable love, our love will always be lacking. But when Jesus calls us to be merciful like the Father, he does not mean in quantity! He asks his disciples to become signs, channels, witnesses of his mercy.

The Church can be nothing other than a sacrament of God’s mercy in the world, at every time and for all of mankind. Every Christian, therefore, is called to be a witness of mercy, and this happens along the path of holiness. (…) Mercy is expressed, first of all, in forgiveness. (…) Jesus does not intend to undermine the course of human justice, he does, however, remind his disciples that in order to have fraternal relationships they must suspend judgment and condemnation. Forgiveness, in fact, is the pillar that holds up the life of the Christian community, because it shows the gratuitousness with which God has loved us first. (…) We do not have the power to condemn our erring brother, we are not above him: rather, we have a duty to recover the dignity of a child of the Father and to accompany him on his journey of conversion. Yusuf dari Arimatea, Murid Yesus.

Yusuf dari Arimatea adalah seorang murid Yesus (Mat 25:57). Ia menjadi murid Yesus secara sembunyi- sembunyi karena takut pada orang- orang Yahudi (Yoh 19:38). Peranannya sebagai seorang murid Yesus terlihat sangat menonjol pada waktu ia meminta kepada Pilatus agar diijinkan menurunkan jenazah Yesus dari atas Salib dan menguburkan Yesus. Bersama Nikodemus (Mat 27: 57, 60; Mrk 15: 42, 46; Luk 23: 50, 53).

Di kalangan bangsa Yahudi, Yusuf Arimatea dikenal sebagai seorang yang baik dan benar (Luk 23:50) dan termasuk anggota Majelis Besar Sanhendrin. Meskipun demikian, ia tidak menyetujui keputusan Majelis itu untuk menghukum mati Yesus (Luk 23:51).

Santo Patrisius, Uskup dan Pengaku Iman.

Santo Patrisius lahir di Inggris pada tahun 389. Ketika berusia 16 tahun, ia diculik oleh orang- orang Irlandia dan dibawa sebagai sandera ke Irlandia. Disana Patrisius dijual sebagai seorang budak. Perlakuan yang tidak manusiawi menimbulkan kebencian yang sangat besar terhadap bangsa Irlandia. Namun lama kelamaan ia menyadari arti penculikan atas dirinya sebagai suatu jalan Tuhan baginya untuk lebih mendekatkan diri pada Tuhan. Kesadarannya akan cinta kasih Kristus yang besar pada manusia perlahan- lahan menghilangkan kebenciannya kepada bangsa Irlandia. Ia kemudian mulai lebih mencintai bangsa Irlandia yang belum mengenal Kristus. Ia merasa prihatin akan cara hidup orang Irlandia yang kafir itu. Ia bertekad untuk membawa orang- orang Irlandia kepada Allah dengan berusaha mempertobatkan mereka.

Untuk melaksanakan tekadnya itu, ia berjuang meloloskan diri dari cengkraman hidup sebagai budak. Ketika perjuangan ini berhasil, ia pergi ke Gallia (sekarang: Perancis) untuk mengikuti pendidikan disana. Setelah menyelesaikan studinya, ia ditabhiskan menjadi imam. Tekadnya untuk mempertobatkan bangsa Irlandia mulai dilaksanakan. Ia kembali ke Irlandia sebagai seorang misionaris Kristus. Di sana ia kemudian di tabhiskan menjadi Uskup Irlandia. Ia berjuang keras untuk membawa bangsa kafir itu kepada pengenalan akan Kristus dan Injil. Dan dia berhasil dalam perjuangannya.

Pemimpin- pemimpin Irlandia yang masih kafir berhasil diyakinkannya dengan berbagai tanda ajaib. Panglima besar bersama seluruh anak buahnya ditobatkan dan dipermandikan. Pemuda- pemudi menyerahkan diri Yesus dengan mengikuti teladan Patrisius. Keberhasilan ini ditunjang dengan pembangunan sekolah- sekolah dan gereja- gereja di seluruh Irlandia. Patrisius dikenal sebagai seorang Uskup yang rendah hati dan memimpin umatnya dengan penuh kasih sayang. Ia meninggal dunia pada tahun 461.

Santa Gertrudis dari Nivelles, Pengaku Iman.

Santa Gertrudis adalah putri raja Pipin. Ia kemudian menjadi Abbas di biara yang didirikan oleh ibunya Santa Iduberga (pesta: 8 Mei). Gertrudis adalah wanita terpelajar dan pembantu orang miskin. Santa pelindung persatuan suami- istri yang diancam perceraian dan orang- orang yang tergoda menjadi musuh satu sama lain.

Dan 9:4 Maka aku memohon kepada TUHAN, Allahku, dan mengaku dosaku, demikian: "Ah Tuhan, Allah yang maha besar dan dahsyat, yang memegang Perjanjian dan kasih setia terhadap mereka yang mengasihi Engkau serta berpegang pada perintah-Mu!

Dan 9:5 Kami telah berbuat dosa dan salah, kami telah berlaku fasik dan telah memberontak, kami telah menyimpang dari perintah dan peraturan-Mu,

Dan 9:6 dan kami tidak taat kepada hamba-hamba-Mu, para nabi, yang telah berbicara atas nama-Mu kepada raja-raja kami, kepada pemimpin-pemimpin kami, kepada bapa-bapa kami dan kepada segenap rakyat negeri.

Dan 9:7 Ya Tuhan, Engkaulah yang benar, tetapi patutlah kami malu seperti pada hari ini, kami orang-orang Yehuda, penduduk kota Yerusalem dan segenap orang Israel, mereka yang dekat dan mereka yang jauh, di segala negeri kemana Engkau telah membuang mereka oleh karena mereka berlaku murtad terhadap Engkau.

Dan 9:8 Ya TUHAN, kami, raja-raja kami, pemimpin-pemimpin kami dan bapa-bapa kami patutlah malu, sebab kami telah berbuat dosa terhadap Engkau.

Dan 9:9 Pada Tuhan, Allah kami, ada kesayangan dan keampunan, walaupun kami telah memberontak terhadap Dia,

Dan 9:10 dan tidak mendengarkan suara TUHAN, Allah kami, yang menyuruh kami hidup menurut hukum yang telah diberikan-Nya kepada kami dengan perantaraan para nabi, hamba-hamba-Nya.

Mzm 79:8 Janganlah perhitungkan kepada kami kesalahan nenek moyang kami; kiranya rahmat-Mu segera menyongsong kami, sebab sudah sangat lemah kami.

Mzm 79:9 Tolonglah kami, ya Allah penyelamat kami, demi kemuliaan nama-Mu! Lepaskanlah kami dan ampunilah dosa kami oleh karena nama-Mu!

Mzm 79:11 Biarlah sampai ke hadapan-Mu keluhan orang tahanan; sesuai dengan kebesaran lengan-Mu, biarkanlah hidup orang-orang yang ditentukan untuk mati dibunuh!

Mzm 79:13 Maka kami ini, umat-Mu, dan kawanan domba gembalaan-Mu, akan bersyukur kepada-Mu untuk selama-lamanya, dan akan memberitakan puji-pujian untuk-Mu turun-temurun.

Luk 6:36 Hendaklah kamu murah hati, sama seperti Bapamu adalah murah hati."
