Rm 11:29 Sebab Allah tidak menyesali kasih karunia dan panggilan-Nya.

Gospel: Luke 14: 12-14

And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind; And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just.

For our reflection today:

If one does not understand the gratuity of God’s invitation, then one understands nothing. God’s invitation is “always free”, thus posing the question: “In order to go to this banquet what should one pay?”. The entrance ticket is to be sick, to be poor, to be a sinner, that is, we must be in need, both in body and in soul. To be in need of care, healing, and love. And I, who am a practising Catholic, I go to mass every Sunday, I carry out my duties, and to me, nothing? The fact is that “he does not understand the gratuity of salvation; he thinks that salvation is the fruit of ‘I pay and you save me’”. Rather, “salvation is free, if you do not enter into such a dynamic of gratuity you will not understand anything”. Salvation, “is a gift from God to which I respond with another gift, the gift of my heart”. They feel safe, they feel secure, they feel saved in their own way, outside of the banquet”, for “they have lost the meaning of gratuity; they have lost the meaning of love and they have lost a greater and more beautiful thing”, namely, “the capacity to feel themselves loved”, which leaves “no hope”; when you no longer feel loved, “you have lost everything”, “we implore the Lord to save us from losing the capacity to feel loved”. (Pope Francis, Santa Marta, 7 November 2017)

Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez (1533–1617) is remembered for his deep holiness, which shone through his humble work as a Jesuit doorkeeper. Born in Segovia, Spain, the son of a prosperous merchant, his family welcomed Jesuit Father Peter Faber, who guided Alphonsus’s early faith. Alphonsus’s path to joining the Jesuits was slow and marked by setbacks. At 12, Alphonsus began studies at a Jesuit college, but his father’s death forced him home to help run the family business. He later married and had three children, but tragedy struck when his wife and children all died. Heavy taxes ruined his business, and Alphonsus, now a widower, was left feeling defeated. In his grief, Alphonsus turned to prayer and sought to join the Jesuits, but was rejected due to his age, fragile health, and limited education. Undeterred, he pursued further studies in Valencia. Eventually, his evident holiness led the Jesuit provincial to admit him as a lay brother. In 1571, at age 37, Alphonsus entered the Jesuit novitiate and was sent to Montesión college in Palma, Majorca. There, he became known for his humble service as doorkeeper and for befriending St. Peter Claver, who would become a missionary to slaves in Colombia. As doorkeeper, Alphonsus welcomed visitors, ran errands, gave alms, and comforted the troubled. He treated each person as if he were welcoming Christ. At age 72, he befriended Peter Claver, encouraging him in missionary work. After Alphonsus’s death, his writings revealed deep mystical experiences and a profound prayer life. He is now celebrated as a model of holiness in ordinary life.

Prayer:

O God, in the faithful service of our brother Alphonsus, You have shown us the way to joy and peace. Make us ready and watchful companions of Jesus, who became the servant of all and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Pelayanan kasih untuk keselamatan jiwa-jiwa dan ciri-ciri panggilan untuk penyembuhan dan pengusiran roh-roh jahat

Renungan singkat pembacaan daripada Injil Santo Markus 3: 20-30. 

Pelayanan kasih untuk keselamatan jiwa-jiwa dan ciri-ciri panggilan untuk penyembuhan dan pengusiran roh-roh jahat. 

Saudara dan saudari yang saya kasihi dalam nama Tuhan Yesus Kristus, 

Perkongsian saya ini adalah dalam pengunaan bahasa yang sederhana dan mudah difahami. Saya menggunakan cara ini agar mereka yang lemah dan tidak ada pelajaran tinggi dapat memahami pesan dan maksud apa yang tertulis disini. Saya juga macam kamurang, tiada pelajaran tinggi dan cuma tahu baca Alkitab Katolik sahaja, itupun kampungan style punya.   
Perkongsian saya disini hanyalah ditujukan kepada semua ahli yang ada di dalam Yesus, Maria, Yusuf Pelayanan Kasih (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels) sahaja. Oleh sebab itu saya menggalakkan anda semua untuk membaca dan meneruskan apa yang tertulis disini agar Misi dan Visi panggilan dan cara hidup kita ini membawa keselamatan kepada orang ramai. Saya mahu agar setiap kelompok atau kumpulan yang sedia ada mengambil masa untuk membaca dan mengkaji kembali kehidupan rohani masing-masing sambil membantu kepada semua ahli untuk menjelaskan perkongsian saya ini. Di harap juga agar semua Pelayan Atasan masing-masing dan juga Rakan Pembimbing Rohani untuk setiap kelompok dan kumpulan mengambil peranan dan tanggungjawab ini untuk membimbing dan membantu satu sama lain, agar kita semua dapat berjalan bersama dalam mencapai kesatuan dengan Allah Tritunggal Yang Maha Kudus, Bapa, Putera, dan Roh Kudus. Bagi umat katolik yang lain yang ingin membacanya, saya menasihatkan agar menggunakan bacaan rohani ini dengan sikap iman dan doa kerana tujuan hidup di dunia ini adalah percaya kepada keselamatan Tuhan Yesus Kristus, melalui GerejaNya yang Satu, Kudus, Katolik dan Apostolik. 

Cara hidup dan pelayanan kita merupakan suatu tindakan kasih dan pengampunan. Kita perlu nilai kembali dan melihat sejauh mana komitmen dan hala tuju hidup kita masing-masing. Kita dipanggil dan dipilih oleh Tuhan untuk bekerjasama denganNya dalam kuasa Roh Kudus, agar keselamatan jiwa-jiwa dapat diselamatkan daripada dosa dan kematian. Kita perlu mencapai ketenangan batin yang sesungguhnya. Cara demikian dapat membantu dan berguna bagi umat Kristian untuk mencapai keheningan. Doa inilah yang saya maksudkan agar dapat memberi manfaat kepada semua ahli kita yang ada di dalam Yesus, Maria, Yusuf Pelayanan Kasih (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels). Doa itu merupakan perjumpaan dengan Tuhan yang berperibadi. Dan untuk mengalami dan ingin bersatu dengan Tuhan di dalam doa sedemikian, marilah kita membaca kembali petikan dari Injil Santo Markus 3: 20-30 ini. Jika kita membaca petikan dari Injil Santo Markus ini, ada kemungkinan kita membuat dua kesimpulan yang berbeza iaitu bahawa Yesus bukanlah pakar dari segi pengusiran roh jahat. Ini bererti GerejaNya itu bukanlah benar dan tetap salah kerana Yesus telah dikatakan kerasukan Beelzebul (ayat 20-22). Yang kedua adalah disebabkan Dia sebagai manusia, Yesus dikatakan tidak waras lagi. Ini boleh menimbulkan keraguan dan kekeliruan untuk mengakui GerejaNya yang Satu, Kudus, Katolik dan Apostolik.  
 
Dan jika kita terus menerus mengatakan bahawa Yesus tidak waras lagi, dapatkah kita menempatkan diri kita lagi di dalam keselamatan dengan perjumpaan Tuhan yang berperibadi? Maksudnya, dapatkah kita sungguh-sungguh berdoa dan mengalami kehadiranNya? Kita jangan sesekali mengatakan bahawa sepanjang kita telah dibaptis dan melayani, kita sudah tahu bermacam-macam bentuk doa. Ini seakan-akan mahu mengalahkan doa Ekaristi dan mahu mengatasi peribadi seorang paderi katolik itu. Saya mahu menegur dan memberi nasihat disini, dan soalan saya hanya yang biasa-biasa sahaja bah, dapatkah kita semua yang hadir di Misa Kudus dan yang melayani di gereja dan komuniti menempatkan diri kita masing-masing di dalam keselamatan dengan perjumpaan Tuhan yang berperibadi? Jika paderi katolik itu hadir di Misa Kudus ataupun tidak, dapatkah kita menempatkan semula diri kita masing-masing di dalam peribadi Yesus yang menyelamatkan dan TabernakelNya? Sekarang dapatkah kita semua menilai dan mengetahui siapakah paderi katolik kita itu sebenarnya? Jika saya seorang Uskup Katolik, saya hanya memberikan satu jawapan sahaja disini iaitu, paderi katolik kita itu adalah manusia biasa tetapi oleh kerana Sakramen Tahbisan, setiap paderi katolik itu adalah “Alter Christus – In persona Christi” latin (Kristus yang lain) mengingatkan kita bahawa, meskipun Kristus sendiri hadir dalam GerejaNya, paderi katolik itu bertindak sebagai “Kristus yang lain” berdasarkan tahbisannya. Oleh itu Gereja Katolik memahami iman Kristian sebagai Alter Christus (Kristus yang lain) yang bertindak dalam persona Christi (dalam peribadi Kristus). Kerana Yesus Kristus adalah seorang lelaki, dan orang-orang yang bertindak dalam persona Christi dan merupakan Alter Christus haruslah lelaki sebagaimana Kristus adalah lelaki. Selain itu, Gereja kita terikat kepada teladan Yesus Kristus sendiri yang hanya memilih lelaki untuk pelayanan ini. Saya menjelaskan keperibadian paderi katolik itu kerana ia melibatkan doa-doa kita setiap hari di Ekaristi serta pembacaan daripada Injil Santo Markus ini. (Injil Santo Yohanes 20: 22-23, Injil Santo Lukas 10: 16)

Untuk memahami pembacaan Injil Santo Markus ini, saya hanya menjelaskan tentang karisma dan godaan yang perlu kita tahu agar setiap kelompok dan kumpulan yang sedia ada di dalam Yesus, Maria, Yusuf Pelayanan Kasih (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels) dapat melangkah lebih berani lagi untuk meneruskan Misi dan Visi kita tanpa rasa takut terhadap roh-roh kepalsuan dan dosa-dosa manusia (Injil Santo Markus 3: 20-30) di dunia ini. Kita lihat sendiri bagaimana ahli-ahli Taurat yang datang dari Yerusalem mengatakan bahawa Yesus kerasukan Beelzebul dan dengan penghulu setan Dia mengusir setan. Percakapan seperti ini membawa maksud yang berbeza dari segi rohani dan bukannya keselamatan. Ayat “kerasukan roh jahat” ini menjelaskan keadaan pemikiran dan pendapat manusia tentang kerja pelayanan Yesus. Dan dengan mengatakan bahawa apa yang dikerjakan Roh Kudus dikerjakan oleh roh jahat, manusia itu sebenarnya menolak terang kasih karunia Allah dan pengampunan dosa yang diberi oleh kasih karunia ini. Sikap itu dengan sendirinya menempatkan orang di luar keselamatan. Tetapi kasih karunia Allah masih juga dapat mengubah sikap itu, sehingga orang kembali dapat menerima kasih karunia itu. Saya akan menjelaskan keadaan kita sebagai manusia yang mudah tergoda serta bagaimana kita harus menanggapi pembacaan daripada Injil Santo Markus ini. Kita akan lihat bagaimana karya Roh Kudus itu sebenarnya dan bagaimana godaan diri sendiri serta kecenderungan yang berasal daripada setan.  

Kita yang dipanggil di dalam pelayanan penyembuhan dan pengusiran roh-roh jahat perlu memahami karisma-karisma yang ada pada diri kita. Ini amat penting bagi seorang pelayan kerana karisma adalah anugerah-anugerah rahmat Roh Kudus, untuk melayani dan semuanya itu diberikan untuk pembangunan Gereja di dunia ini, untuk kesejahteraan manusia dan untuk keperluan dunia masa kini. Misal kata kita juga dikatakan kurang waras atau gila, rujuklah kembali makna dan erti karisma disini. Ingatlah karisma-karisma daripada Tuhan harus kita terima dengan rasa syukur kerana karisma-karisma yang kita perolehi itu adalah kekayaan rahmat yang mengagumkan untuk daya hidup apostolik dan untuk kekudusan seluruh Tubuh Kristus. Yang perlu kita sedari disini adalah karisma dan anugerah tersebut adalah sesungguhnya berasal daripada Roh Kudus. Dan anugerah-anugerah itu harus dilaksanakan dalam cinta yang merupakan ukuran karisma yang sebenarnya. Ini menjelaskan identiti kita sebagai anak-anak Allah Bapa dan juga sebagai seorang pelayan dan gembala yang baik (1 Korintus 13). Oleh itu saya mahu semua ahli yang ada di setiap kelompok dan kumpulan masing-masing hari ini untuk menguji karisma-karisma tersebut. Sentiasa memperingatkan kepada diri masing-masing bahawa tidak ada satu karisma membebaskan dari kewajiban untuk menghormati gembala-gembala Gereja dan untuk mentaati mereka. Seperti yang telah dijelaskan bahawa “terutama mereka itulah yang berfungsi, bukan untuk memadamkan Roh, melainkan untuk menguji segalanya dan mempertahankan apa yang baik” (LG 12). Semua karisma walaupun banyak perbezaan bertujuan untuk saling melengkapi, harus bekerjasama sehingga berguna bagi kepentingan bersama (1 Korintus 12:7).  
Oleh itu bagi kita semua yang merasakan terpanggil di dalam pelayanan penyembuhan dan pengusiran roh-roh jahat, bacalah kembali petikan daripada Injil Santo Markus ini sebagai doa peribadi dan renungan. Ini bertujuan agar kita tidak mudah lupa bahawa godaan di dalam doa itu sering terjadi. Kita lihat sendiri bagaimana Yesus dikatakan kurang waras. Kita sebagai manusia biasa boleh juga dikatakan kurang waras kerana ketidakpedulian kita terhadap kesukaran di dalam doa. Haruslah kita mengakui keterbatasan kita di dalam pelayanan. Tetapi sebagai pengikut Tuhan Yesus Kristus, doa adalah anugerah rahmat dan perlunya jawapan ketegasan daripada pihak kita. 

Saya menggunakan “perjuangan rohani” kerana pendoa-pendoa di dalam Perjanjian Lama sebelum Kristus, demikian juga dengan Bunda Maria dan para Orang Kudus serta Yesus sendiri mengajarkan kita bahawa berdoa bererti berjuang. Kita berjuang bererti kita melawan diri kita sendiri dan melawan tipu muslihat penggoda yang melakukan segala-galanya untuk mencegah manusia dari doa dan juga daripada persatuan dengan Allah. Kita lihat sendiri bagaimana Yesus dikatakan kurang waras. Ada kemungkinan kita juga mulai memikirkan hal yang serupa sehingga tidak mampu lagi untuk berjuang di dalam doa. Hal-hal seperti ini kita boleh nilai sendiri sebab dan puncanya serta siapakah yang sentiasa menghalang kita untuk datang kepada Tuhan. Nasihat dan pandangan peribadi saya adalah, siapa di antara kita yang tidak selalu mahu bertindak dalam semangat Kristus, mereka juga tidak boleh terbiasa untuk berdoa dalam namaNya. Dapatkah kita menempatkan semula pelayanan kasih kita terhadap semua orang? Tentang karisma dan godaan yang saya jelaskan tadi, boleh jadi timbul keraguan untuk berdoa dalam nama Yesus. Ini kerana terdapatnya kekeliruan mengenai doa yang kita temukan di dalam diri kita sendiri dan di sekitar kita. Andaikata kita juga dikatakan kurang waras dan tidak sempurna, dan kita mulai terasa oleh percakapan dan ejekan orang lain, ada kemungkinan kita ini mulai tergoda dan timbulnya keberatan terhadap doa katolik. Memang sebagai manusia yang mulai tertarik kepada doa, kita pada mulanya bersemangat di dalam pelayanan ini. Tetapi yang perlu saya peringatkan disini adalah keadaan Yesus yang dikatakan kurang waras itu. Jika di zaman kita ini, peristiwa itu merupakan ejekan dan pendapat orang lain terhadap kita. Kemudian jika kita tidak berakar di dalam Yesus Kristus, kita mulai mengalami kegagalan di dalam doa. Timbullah rasa tawar hati kerana diejek dan dihina, rasa sedih mulai menggangu hidup kita sehingga merasakan tidak boleh memberikan cara hidup dan pelayanan kita segala-galanya kepada Allah. Perhatikan keadaan peristiwa kekosongan batin dan psikologis ini. Ini menurut saya disebabkan kita mulai cepat tawar hati. Dan mereka yang mencari Tuhan di dalam doa sangat cepat tawar hati, kerana mereka tidak tahu bahawa doa juga datang dari Roh Kudus dan bukan hanya dari mereka sendiri. 
  
Marilah kita kembali untuk membaca kisah Nabi Elia di Perjanjian Lama. Allah yang menyatakan diri di gunung Horeb itu menunjukkan bahawa Allah juga berkenan kepada Nabi Elia sehingga berfirman kepada dia. Kehadiran Allah itu ternyata dalam keadaan yang tenang dan damai. Kita lihat disini bagaimana Allah yang berfirman itu sebenarnya membimbing Nabi Elia agar mengikuti tunjuk ajarNya. “Angin sepoi-sepoi” ini menjelaskan bahawa Nabi Elia berhasil untuk mendengarkan suara Tuhan. Ini bukannya godaan yang membawa kepada kegelisahan dan rasa takut. Dan suara senyap dan lembut itu adalah suara Tuhan. Nabi Elia mendengar suara Tuhan yang menyembuhkan baginya, hanya setelah dia mendengar “suara senyap dan lembut” tadi. Tuhan berbicara dalam keheningan dan hanya orang hening di dalam hati dapat mendengar apa yang dikatakan oleh Tuhan. Pengalaman seperti ini mengajak kepada kita semua untuk lebih bersungguh-sungguh di dalam keheningan doa. Bila berasal dari Allah, hal itu akan menghasilkan buah dalam roh pada saat diberikan. Buah inilah yang penting. Hayatilah kembali Nabi Elia dan Allah yang menyatakan diriNya di gunung Horeb. Tetapi jika datangnya daripada setan maka akan menimbulkan efek-efek lain seperti kegelisahan, kekeringan, kebanggaan yang sia-sia dan rasa sombong (1 Raja 19: 12-13)

Semoga dengan penjelasan dan perkongsian ini, kita semua dapat memahami apakah pelayanan kita itu bersesuaian dengan karisma-karisma yang ada pada diri kita. Nasihat saya janganlah melebih-lebih di dalam pelayanan. Cukuplah dengan karisma dan karunia yang ada pada diri kita. Lebih baik menjadi seorang yang rendah hati dan pendoa daripada menjadi seorang yang sombong dan menonjolkan diri. What I want to say now is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ – it is the truth – my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too. What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood. They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the covenants; the Law and the ritual were drawn up for them, and the promises were made to them. They are descended from the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ who is above all, God for ever blessed! Amen.

Gospel : Luke 14:1‐6

Now on a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. There in front of him was a man with dropsy, and Jesus addressed the lawyers and Pharisees. ‘Is it against the law’ he asked ‘to cure a man on the sabbath, or not?’ But they remained silent, so he took the man and cured him and sent him away. Then he said to them, ‘Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, or his ox, will not pull him out on a sabbath day without hesitation?’ And to this they could find no answer.

For our reflection today:

This very way “of living, attached to the law, distanced them from love and from justice: they were attentive to the law, they disregarded justice; they were attentive to the law, they overlooked love”. The Lord found these were “closed men, men too attached to the law”, or rather, too attached “to the letter of the law”, because “the law is love”. These men “always closed the doors of hope, of love, of salvation”. This is precisely “the path that Jesus teaches us, the exact opposite of that of the doctors of the law”. And “this path, from love to justice, leads to God”. Only “the path that goes from love to knowledge and to discernment, to complete fulfillment, leads to holiness, to salvation, to the encounter with Jesus”. “The other path”, however, “that of sticking only to the law, to the letter of the law, leads to closure, leads to selfishness”. And it leads “to the arrogance of considering ourselves just”, to that so-called “‘holiness’ of appearances”. Such that “Jesus says to these people: you like people to see you as men of prayer, of fasting”. This is only for appearances. And “this is why Jesus said to the people: do what they say, not what they do”, because “that mustn’t be done”. Jesus draws near: closeness is the very proof that we are “on the true path”. Because that is “the path that God has chosen in order to save us: closeness. He drew close to us, he made himself man”. And indeed, “God’s flesh is the sign; God’s flesh is the sign of true justice. God who made himself a man like one of us, and we who must make ourselves like the others, like the needy, like those who need our help”. (Pope Francis, Santa Marta, 31 October 2014)

1Yoh 3:1 Lihatlah, betapa besarnya kasih yang dikaruniakan Bapa kepada kita, sehingga kita disebut anak-anak Allah, dan memang kita adalah anak-anak Allah. Karena itu dunia tidak mengenal kita, sebab dunia tidak mengenal Dia.
1Yoh 3:2 Saudara-saudaraku yang kekasih, sekarang kita adalah anak-anak Allah, tetapi belum nyata apa keadaan kita kelak; akan tetapi kita tahu, bahwa apabila Kristus menyatakan diri-Nya, kita akan menjadi sama seperti Dia, sebab kita akan melihat Dia dalam keadaan-Nya yang sebenarnya.

For our reflection today:

Today the Church celebrates the feast of all the Saints. Men and women whom the history of the great have often ignored, because the precious pearl of their witness was covered by the veil of humility and concealment. Men and women who drew from the inexhaustible fullness of the One who alone is holy, and brought a fragment of it to life, offering Him their concrete face so that He might be incarnated in it, as in a living symbol. Each of them is a small but unique light. They lived to the fullest their calling to be themselves, according to the wonderful originality that the Creator had placed in them. Now, mysteriously united with the choir of myriads of other brothers and sisters, they illuminate the sometimes dark landscape of this world and invite it to hope, to trust; bearing witness to how God’s holiness never fails, never ceases to communicate itself, to associate with itself simple men and women, rich only in their disarmed availability, in their humble, transparent abandonment.(St John Paul II, Angelus, 1 November 1986)

Saint Germanus of Capua

Born in the 5th century into a prosperous family, St. Germanus willingly relinquished his wealth to provide for the less fortunate. He then embraced an ascetic lifestyle until the year 516, when he ascended to the position of Bishop of Capua. Esteemed and cherished within his diocese, he embarked on a crucial diplomatic mission. At the behest of Pope Ormisda, he went on a voyage to Constantinople to mediate the schism initiated by Patriarch Acacio. St. Germanus played a pivotal role in successful negotiations. Emperor Justino and Patriarch John eventually endorsed the document proposed by Pope Ormisda, effectively overcoming a division that had persisted for two generations. Upon his return to his diocese, Bishop Germanus continued to lead a life of asceticism until his passing in 541. Grateful for his efforts, the faithful laid him to rest in the church of Santo Stefano and revered him as a saint.

Prayer:

St. Germanus of Capua, pray for us to receive the required prudence to settle disputes in our daily lives.

He not only died for us – he rose from the dead, and there at God’s right hand he stands and pleads for us. Nothing therefore can come between us and the love of Christ, even if we are troubled or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food or clothes, or being threatened or even attacked. As scripture promised: For your sake we are being massacred daily, and reckoned as sheep for the slaughter. These are the trials through which we triumph, by the power of him who loved us. How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused! So be it! Your house will be left to you. For our reflection today:

God, in fact, “cannot help but love. This is our security”. I can reject this love, but that would mean choosing to be like the good thief who rejected love “until the end of his life”, and there at the end “love was waiting for him”. Even the man who is “the most wicked, the worst blasphemer, is loved by God with the tenderness of a father, of a dad”, and, to use Jesus’ words, “as a hen with her brood”. The mighty God, the Creator, can do all things”; yet “God weeps” and “in those tears” is all of his love. “God weeps over me, when I am separated from him; God weeps over each of us; God weeps for those wicked ones, who do so many bad things, so much harm to humanity.”. Indeed, he “he waits, he does not condemn, and he cries. Why? Because he loves!”. (Pope Francis, Santa Marta, 29 October 2015)

For our reflection today:

This very way “of living, attached to the law, distanced them from love and from justice: they were attentive to the law, they disregarded justice; they were attentive to the law, they overlooked love”. The Lord found these were “closed men, men too attached to the law”, or rather, too attached “to the letter of the law”, because “the law is love”. These men “always closed the doors of hope, of love, of salvation”. This is precisely “the path that Jesus teaches us, the exact opposite of that of the doctors of the law”. And “this path, from love to justice, leads to God”. Only “the path that goes from love to knowledge and to discernment, to complete fulfillment, leads to holiness, to salvation, to the encounter with Jesus”. “The other path”, however, “that of sticking only to the law, to the letter of the law, leads to closure, leads to selfishness”. And it leads “to the arrogance of considering ourselves just”, to that so-called “‘holiness’ of appearances”. Such that “Jesus says to these people: you like people to see you as men of prayer, of fasting”. This is only for appearances. And “this is why Jesus said to the people: do what they say, not what they do”, because “that mustn’t be done”. Jesus draws near: closeness is the very proof that we are “on the true path”. Because that is “the path that God has chosen in order to save us: closeness. He drew close to us, he made himself man”. And indeed, “God’s flesh is the sign; God’s flesh is the sign of true justice. God who made himself a man like one of us, and we who must make ourselves like the others, like the needy, like those who need our help”. (Pope Francis, Santa Marta, 31 October 2014)

Luk 14:4 Mereka itu diam semuanya. Lalu Ia memegang tangan orang sakit itu dan menyembuhkannya dan menyuruhnya pergi.

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano

Ruggero and Teresa Badano of Sassello, Italy, welcomed their daughter Chiara in 1971 after years of longing for a child. From a young age, Chiara showed remarkable compassion, sharing her best toys with needy children, visiting the elderly, and caring for sick classmates. She was deeply drawn to the Gospel and loved attending Mass. At nine, Chiara joined the Focolare Movement, finding friendship and inspiration in its Christ-centered values. Her involvement fostered a profound spirituality, earning her the affectionate nickname “Sister” among classmates. Chiara was a typical teenager—she enjoyed sports, hiking, music, and dancing—but it was her loving example, not words, that spoke of her faith. At sixteen, Chiara met Focolare’s founder, Chiara Lubich, who gave her the name “Luce” (Light), recognizing her radiant love for Jesus. Soon after, Chiara was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer. Rather than despair, she chose to offer her suffering to Jesus, saying, “If this is what You want, Jesus, so do I.” She refused morphine, desiring to remain present in her offering of love. Confined to bed, Chiara inspired many through letters, joyful faith, and generosity, giving her savings to missions and planning her funeral as a celebration. She died on October 7, 1990, at 18, surrounded by loved ones. Thousands attended her funeral, and she was beatified in 2010. Chiara’s life continues to inspire others to endure suffering with love and find intimacy with God.

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, help us share Jesus’ love through our actions and endure life’s trials with deep love for Him.

First Reading : Romans 8:26‐30

The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words, and God who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what he means, and that the pleas of the saints expressed by the Spirit are according to the mind of God. We know that by turning everything to their good God co‐operates with all those who love him, with all those that he has called according to his purpose. They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers. He called those he intended for this; those he called he justified, and with those he justified he shared his glory.

Lord, I trust in your mercy.

Gospel : Luke 13:22‐30

Through towns and villages Jesus went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem. Someone said to him, ‘Sir, will there be only a few saved?’ He said to them, ‘Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed. ‘Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself knocking on the door, saying, “Lord, open to us” but he will answer, “I do not know where you come from.” Then you will find yourself saying, “We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets” but he will reply, “I do not know where you come from. Away from me, all you wicked men!” ‘Then there will be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves turned outside. And men from east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. ‘Yes, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last.’

For our reflection today:

What does this "narrow door" mean? Why do many not succeed in entering through it? Is it a way reserved for only a few of the chosen? Indeed, at close examination this way of reasoning by those who were conversing with Jesus is always timely: the temptation to interpret religious practice as a source of privileges or security is always lying in wait. Actually, Christ's message goes in exactly the opposite direction: everyone may enter life, but the door is "narrow" for all. We are not privileged. The passage to eternal life is open to all, but it is "narrow" because it is demanding: it requires commitment, self-denial and the mortification of one's selfishness. Salvation, which Jesus brought with his death and Resurrection, is universal. He is the One Redeemer and invites everyone to the banquet of immortal life; but on one and the same condition: that of striving to follow and imitate him, taking up one's cross as he did, and devoting one's life to serving the brethren. This condition for entering heavenly life is consequently one and universal. True friendship with Jesus is expressed in the way of life: it is expressed with goodness of heart, with humility, meekness and mercy, love for justice and truth, a sincere and honest commitment to peace and reconciliation. We might say that this is the "identity card" that qualifies us as his real "friends"; this is the "passport" that will give us access to eternal life. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 26 August 2007)

For our reflection today:

God, in fact, “cannot help but love. This is our security”. I can reject this love, but that would mean choosing to be like the good thief who rejected love “until the end of his life”, and there at the end “love was waiting for him”. Even the man who is “the most wicked, the worst blasphemer, is loved by God with the tenderness of a father, of a dad”, and, to use Jesus’ words, “as a hen with her brood”. The mighty God, the Creator, can do all things”; yet “God weeps” and “in those tears” is all of his love. “God weeps over me, when I am separated from him; God weeps over each of us; God weeps for those wicked ones, who do so many bad things, so much harm to humanity.”. Indeed, he “he waits, he does not condemn, and he cries. Why? Because he loves!”. (Pope Francis, Santa Marta, 29 October 2015)

Saints Simon and Jude (Taddeo), Apostles (28 October).

Saint Jude Thaddeus and Saint Simon, two of the least known Apostles, are paradoxically among the closest to their Master, two of his cousins. At least, the tradition is quite certain of it as regards Jude Thaddeus, since it is clear from the Scriptures that his father, Alpheus, was the brother of St. Joseph, while his mother, Mary Cleophas, was a cousin of the Virgin. As for Simon, things are shrouded in fog.

Many faces, an Apostle.

The Gospel names St. Simon as the tenth apostle, just before Jude Thaddeus. Many identify in Simon the homonymous cousin of Christ, brother of James the Younger. The Byzantines identify in him Nathanael of Cana and the canteen director at the wedding of Cana, while St. Fortunatus of Poitiers states that Simon and Jude Thaddeus were buried in Suanir, a city in Persia, where they suffered martyrdom. According to tradition, it is almost certainly in this part of the world that Simon, known as the Zealot or the Canaanite, as the evangelists Matthew and Mark call him, crossed paths with Jude THaddeus, who would be his companion in mission until the end.

Jude, the faithful disciple.

When the Eleven dispersed from Jerusalem to proclaim the Kingdom of God in other lands, Jude Thaddeus departed from Galilee and Samaria to go into Syria, Armenia and ancient Persia. In this area, authoritative sources claim, he met Simon, and their missionary partnership won tens of thousands of Babylonians and people from other cities for Christ. As always, the Gospel earned for itself both followers and enemies: for the two Apostles, the hour of supreme witness eventually arrived.

The courage to be called Christians.

Arrested and taken to the Temple of the Sun, the sentence imposed on both was to worship the goddess Diana, and so to deny Christ. In refusing, it is said that Jude Thaddeus declared pagan idols false, and that at the same time two horrible demons came out of the temple, destroying him. Frightened, the people watching the scene are said to have pounced ferociously on the two Apostles, who are brutally killed. Their relics are kept in the Basilica of Saint Peter.

Rm 8:26 Demikian juga Roh membantu kita dalam kelemahan kita; sebab kita tidak tahu, bagaimana sebenarnya harus berdoa; tetapi Roh sendiri berdoa untuk kita kepada Allah dengan keluhan-keluhan yang tidak terucapkan.

Gospel: Luke 13: 22-30

And he went through the cities and towns teaching, and making his journey to Jerusalem. And a certain man said to him: Lord, are they few that are saved? But he said to them: Strive to enter by the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, shall seek to enter, and shall not be able. But when the master of the house shall be gone in, and shall shut the door, you shall begin to stand without, and knock at the door, saying: Lord, open to us. And he answering, shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are. Then you shall begin to say: We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. And he shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are: depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. And there shall come from the east and the west, and the north and the south; and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. For our reflection today:

What does this "narrow door" mean? Why do many not succeed in entering through it? Is it a way reserved for only a few of the chosen? Indeed, at close examination this way of reasoning by those who were conversing with Jesus is always timely: the temptation to interpret religious practice as a source of privileges or security is always lying in wait. Actually, Christ's message goes in exactly the opposite direction: everyone may enter life, but the door is "narrow" for all. We are not privileged. The passage to eternal life is open to all, but it is "narrow" because it is demanding: it requires commitment, self-denial and the mortification of one's selfishness. Salvation, which Jesus brought with his death and Resurrection, is universal. He is the One Redeemer and invites everyone to the banquet of immortal life; but on one and the same condition: that of striving to follow and imitate him, taking up one's cross as he did, and devoting one's life to serving the brethren. This condition for entering heavenly life is consequently one and universal. True friendship with Jesus is expressed in the way of life: it is expressed with goodness of heart, with humility, meekness and mercy, love for justice and truth, a sincere and honest commitment to peace and reconciliation. We might say that this is the "identity card" that qualifies us as his real "friends"; this is the "passport" that will give us access to eternal life. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 26 August 2007)

As every structure is aligned on him, all grow into one holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit.

Gospel : Luke 6:12‐19

Jesus went out into the hills to pray; and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. When day came he summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them ‘apostles’: Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits were also cured, and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him because power came out of him that cured them all.

For our reflection today:

The Lord is the “one who prays, who chooses and who is not ashamed to be close to the people”. Commenting on a passage from the Gospel according to Luke (6:12-19), Pope Francis highlighted these three characteristics which “effectively portray Jesus’ personality” and which also motivate our “trust in him: we trust him because he prays, because he has chosen us and because he is close”.

The Pontiff first spoke about prayer. Luke says that the Lord “went out into the hills to pray; and all night he continued in prayer to God”. He “was praying for us. It seems a bit strange that he has come to grant us salvation, he has that power”, and yet, Pope Francis observed, “he so often prays, he even talks about it”, recalling the phrase addressed to Peter during the Last Supper: “I have prayed for you”.

Jesus has prayed and continues to pray for us: “he is the intercessor”, the Bishop of Rome declared. “Even now, as he stands before the Father in heaven, this is his work: to intercede. He is the great intercessor”. It is not by chance that “when we pray to the Father, at the beginning of Mass, every day, at the end of the prayer we say to the Father: ‘We ask this of you through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who prays for us”. Because in that very moment the Son is before the Father “praying for us”.

This truth “should give us courage”. Because in “times of difficulty or of need”, Pope Francis urged, one must remember: “You are praying for me. Jesus is praying for me. Jesus prays to the Father for me”. Thus, the Pope added, this “is his work today: to pray for us, for his Church”. And even if “we often forget that Jesus is praying for us”, this is indeed “our strength”. The strength of being able “to say to the Father: ‘But if you, Father, do not see us, look at your Son who is praying for us”. From the first moment Jesus prays: he prayed when he was on earth and he continues to pray now for each of us, for all the Church”.

Passing to the second moment in the Gospel scene — “And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he named Apostles” — the Pontiff pointed out that “it was he who chose; and he clearly says so: ‘You did not choose me but I chose you’”. Therefore, this approach of Jesus also gives us courage, because we have that assurance: “I am chosen, I am chosen by the Lord. On the day of Baptism he chose me”. St Paul was conscious of this, and thinking of this he said: “He chose me, from the very womb of my mother”.

And why are we “chosen” as Christians? Francis finds the answer to this question in the love of God, who “does not look to see whether one’s face is ugly or fair: He loves”! And Jesus does the same: he loves and chooses with love. And he chooses everyone”. On his “list” there are no important people “according to worldly criteria: there are common people”. The only feature which characterizes them all is that “they are sinners”. Jesus chose sinners. He chooses sinners. And this is the accusation that the doctors of the law, the scribes, make: “This one eats with sinners, he speaks with prostitutes”.

But this is how Jesus is and thus “he calls everyone”, the Bishop of Rome continued, recalling the parable of the marriage feast of the son: “When the guests did not come, what did the master do? He sent his servants: ‘Go and bring everyone home! The good and the bad”, the Gospel says. Jesus chose everyone. He chose sinners and for this he is reproached by the doctors of the law”. His criterion is love, which is clear from “the day of our Baptism”, when “we were officially chosen”. And in that choice “is the love of Jesus”. Indeed, he “looked at me and he said to me: you!”. It is enough to ponder the choice of “Judas Iscariot, who became the traitor, the greatest sinner for him. But he was chosen by Jesus”.

Lastly the third moment, described in the day’s Gospel with these words: “And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And all the crowd sought to touch him”. The scene essentially presents a “Jesus close to the people. He is not a professor, a teacher, a mystic who distances himself and speaks from a pulpit”, but rather a person who “is in the midst of the people; he lets himself be touched; he lets the people call him. This is how Jesus is: close to the people”.

And this closeness, Pope Francis explained, “is not a new thing for him: he emphasized it in his manner of conduct, however, it is something which comes from God’s first choice for his people. God tells his people: “Consider, which people have a God as close as I am to you?’”. God’s closeness to his people, the Pontiff concluded, “is Jesus’ closeness to the people”. All the crowd sought to touch him, because a power emanated from him which healed everyone. Close in this way, in the midst of the people” (Pope Francis, On Jesus’ list Tuesday, 5 September 2014).
