JERUSALEM BIBLE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN

JERUSALEM BIBLE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN

CHAPTER 4

1. When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had found out that he was making and baptising more disciples than John-
2. though in fact it was his disciples who baptised, not Jesus himself-
3. he left Judaea and went back to Galilee.
4. He had to pass through Samaria.
5. On the way he came to the Samaritan town called Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6. Jacob's well was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.'
8. His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
9. The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, for something to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans.
10. Jesus replied to her: If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me something to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water.
11. 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water?
12. Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his sons and his cattle?'
13. Jesus replied: Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again;
14. but no one who drinks the water that I shall give will ever be thirsty again: the water that I shall give will become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life.
15. 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again to draw water.'
16. 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.'
17. The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have no husband";
18. for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.'
19. 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman.
20. 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.'
21. Jesus said: Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews.
23. But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks.
24. God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.
25. The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he will explain everything.'
26. Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.'
27. At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though none of them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?'
28. The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tell the people,
29. 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?'
30. This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him.
31. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat';
32. but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'
33. So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?'
34. But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work.
35. Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Well, I tell you, look around you, look at the fields; already they are white, ready for harvest!
36. Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so that sower and reaper can rejoice together.
37. For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps;
38. I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have come into the rewards of their labour.
39. Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'He told me everything I have done.'
40. So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days, and
41. many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them;
42. and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heard him ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'
43. When the two days were over Jesus left for Galilee.
44. He himself had declared that a prophet is not honoured in his own home town.
45. On his arrival the Galileans received him well, having seen all that he had done at Jerusalem during the festival which they too had attended.
46. He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum;
47. hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure his son, as he was at the point of death.
48. Jesus said to him, 'Unless you see signs and portents you will not believe!'
49. 'Sir,' answered the official, 'come down before my child dies.'
50. 'Go home,' said Jesus, 'your son will live.' The man believed what Jesus had said and went on his way home;
51. and while he was still on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
52. He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. They replied, 'The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.'
53. The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, 'Your son will live'; and he and all his household believed.
54. This new sign, the second, Jesus performed on his return from Judaea to Galilee.

CHAPTER 3

1. There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,
2. who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'
3. Jesus answered: In all truth I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.
4. Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the womb again and be born?'
5. Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born through water and the Spirit;
6. what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.
8. The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
9. 'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.
10. Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!
11. 'In all truth I tell you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.
12. If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how will you believe me when I speak to you about heavenly things?
13. No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;
14. as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up
15. so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
16. For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
17. For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
18. No one who believes in him will be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, because that person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.
19. And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness to the light because their deeds were evil.
20. And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from being shown up;
21. but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear as done in God.'
22. After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there and baptised.
23. John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were going there and were being baptised.
24. For John had not yet been put in prison.
25. Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,
26. so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, the man to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'
27. John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.
28. 'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go in front of him."
29. 'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listens to him, is filled with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.
30. He must grow greater, I must grow less.
31. He who comes from above is above all others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven
32. bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;
33. though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,
34. since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.
35. The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.
36. Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will never see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'

CHAPTER 2

1. On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there,
2. and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited.
3. And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had all been used, and the mother of Jesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'
4. Jesus said, 'Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.'
5. His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'
6. There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons.
7. Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water,' and they filled them to the brim.
8. Then he said to them, 'Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.'
9. They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from -- though the servants who had drawn the water knew -- the president of the feast called the bridegroom
10. and said, 'Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.'
11. This was the first of Jesus' signs: it was at Cana in Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
12. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, but they stayed there only a few days.
13. When the time of the Jewish Passover was near Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
14. and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there.
15. Making a whip out of cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, sheep and cattle as well, scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over
16. and said to the dove sellers, 'Take all this out of here and stop using my Father's house as a market.'
17. Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: I am eaten up with zeal for your house.
18. The Jews intervened and said, 'What sign can you show us that you should act like this?'
19. Jesus answered, 'Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.'
20. The Jews replied, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple: are you going to raise it up again in three days?'
21. But he was speaking of the Temple that was his body,
22. and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and what he had said.
23. During his stay in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he did,
24. but Jesus knew all people and did not trust himself to them;
25. he never needed evidence about anyone; he could tell what someone had within.

CHAPTER 1

1. In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2. He was with God in the beginning.
3. Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
4. What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
5. and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
6. A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
7. He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
8. He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
9. The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
10. He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
11. He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
12. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed in his name
13. who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
14. The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from the Father as only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15. John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me has passed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
16. Indeed, from his fullness we have, all of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
17. for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
18. No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known.
19. This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?'
20. He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
21. So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
22. So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?'
23. So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord. Make his paths straight!'
24. Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
25. and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?'
26. John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
27. is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
28. This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
29. The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.
30. It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existed before me."
31. I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might be revealed to Israel.'
32. And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.
33. I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."
34. I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'
35. The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,
36. and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'
37. And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38. Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' -- which means Teacher -- 'where do you live?'
39. He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.
40. One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.
41. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- which means the Christ-
42. and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas' -- which means Rock.
43. The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'
44. Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
45. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'
46. Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied, 'Come and see.'
47. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is no deception.'
48. Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw you under the fig tree.'
49. Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'
50. Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to see greater things than that.'
51. And then he added, 'In all truth I tell you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.'

Pembacaan Mazmur:

Mzm 81:6 (81-7) "Aku telah mengangkat beban dari bahunya, tangannya telah bebas dari keranjang pikulan;

Mzm 84:8 (84-9) Ya TUHAN, Allah semesta alam, dengarkanlah doaku, pasanglah telinga, ya Allah Yakub.

First Reading : Exodus 40:16‐21,34‐38

Moses did exactly as the Lord had directed him. The tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the second year. Moses erected the tabernacle. He fixed the sockets for it, put up its frames, put its crossbars in position, set up its posts. He spread the tent over the tabernacle and on top of this the covering for the tent, as the Lord had directed Moses. He took the Testimony and placed it inside the ark. He set the shafts to the ark and placed the throne of mercy on it. He brought the ark into the tabernacle and put the screening veil in place; thus he screened the ark of the Lord, as the Lord had directed Moses. The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because of the cloud that rested on it and because of the glory of the Lord that filled the tabernacle. At every stage of their journey, whenever the cloud rose from the tabernacle the sons of Israel would resume their march. If the cloud did not rise, they waited and would not march until it did. For the cloud of the Lord rested on the tabernacle by day, and a fire shone within the cloud by night, for all the House of Israel to see. And so it was for every stage of their journey.

Responsive Psalm : Psalm 83(84):3‐6,8,11

How lovely is your dwelling‐place, Lord, God of hosts.

My soul is longing and yearning, is yearning for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my soul ring out their joy to God, the living God.

How lovely is your dwelling‐place, Lord, God of hosts.

The sparrow herself finds a home and the swallow a nest for her brood; she lays her young by your altars, Lord of hosts, my king and my God.

How lovely is your dwelling‐place, Lord, God of hosts.

They are happy, who dwell in your house, for ever singing your praise. They walk with ever‐growing strength, they will see the God of gods in Zion.

How lovely is your dwelling‐place, Lord, God of hosts.

One day within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. The threshold of the house of God. I prefer to the dwellings of the wicked.

How lovely is your dwelling‐place, Lord, God of hosts.

Alleluia: Acts 16: 14b
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
14b Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son.
(14. One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dye trade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying).
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel : Matthew 13:47‐53

Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’ When Jesus had finished these parables he left the district.

For our reflection today:

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of discernment with images taken from ordinary life ; for example, he describes the fishers who select the good fish and discard the bad ones; or the merchant who knows how to identify, among many pearls, the one of greatest value. Or he who, ploughing a field, comes across something that turns out to be a treasure (cf. Mt 13:44-48). In the final judgement God will exercise discernment, the great discernment, with regard to us. The images of the farmer, the fisherman, and the merchant are examples of what happens in the Kingdom of Heaven, a Kingdom that manifests itself in the ordinary actions of life, which require us to take a stand. This is why it is so important to be able to discern: great choices can arise from circumstances that at first sight seem secondary, but turn out to be decisive. For example, let us think of Andrew and John’s first encounter with Jesus, an encounter that stems from a simple question: “Rabbi, where do you live?”, “Come and see”, says Jesus (cf. Jn 1:38-39). A very brief exchange, but it is the beginning of a change that, step by step, will mark their whole life. Years later, the Evangelist will continue to remember that encounter that changed him forever, and he will even remember the time: ‘It was about four o’clock in the afternoon’ (v. 39). It is the hour when time and the eternal met in his life. And in a good decision, correct, there is an encounter between God’s will and our will; there is an encounter between the present path and the eternal. Making the right decision, after a path of discernment, is to make this encounter: time with eternity. (Pope Francis, General Audience, 31 August 2022)

Saint Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola is renowned for establishing the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, and composing the "Spiritual Exercises," widely employed in retreats and personal discernment today. St. Ignatius was born in 1491 into a noble family in Guipuzcoa, Spain. Ignatius served as a page in the Spanish court during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. Afterward, he joined the Spanish army and suffered a leg wound during the siege of Pamplona in 1521. During recovery from the leg injury, he read "Lives of the Saints," this experience led him to undergo conversion and dedicate himself to the Catholic faith. Following a general confession in a monastery at Montserrat, St. Ignatius spent nearly a year in solitude. He authored his renowned "Spiritual Exercises" before embarking on a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land, where he endeavored to convert Muslims.

Upon his return, St. Ignatius completed his studies in Spain and subsequently in France, where he earned his theology degree. Despite facing contempt for his holy lifestyle, St. Ignatius' wisdom and virtue drew followers, giving birth to the Society of Jesus. Pope Paul III approved the Society in 1540, and it experienced rapid growth after that. St. Ignatius remained in Rome, where he governed the Society and became friends with St. Philip Neri. St. Ignatius passed away peacefully on July 31, 1556, and in 1622, Pope Gregory XV canonized him.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, you listened to God's call to a life of selfless service. Obtain for us the grace to be attentive to God's voice and discern His will.

Readings from the Bible of the Roman Catholic Church:

First Reading: Exodus 34: 29-35
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 99: 5, 6, 7, 9
Alleluia: John 15: 15b
Gospel: Matthew 13: 44-46

First Reading : Exodus 34:29‐35

When Moses came down from the mountain of Sinai – as he came down from the mountain, Moses had the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands – he did not know that the skin on his face was radiant after speaking with the Lord. And when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, the skin on his face shone so much that they would not venture near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron with all the leaders of the community came back to him; and he spoke to them. Then all the sons of Israel came closer, and he passed on to them all the orders that the Lord had given him on the mountain of Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever he went into the Lord’s presence to speak with him, Moses would remove the veil until he came out again. And when he came out, he would tell the sons of Israel what he had been ordered to pass on to them, and the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he returned to speak with the Lord.

Responsive Psalm : Psalm 98(99):5‐7,9

You are holy, O Lord our God.

Exalt the Lord our God; bow down before Zion, his footstool. He the Lord is holy.

You are holy, O Lord our God.

Among his priests were Aaron and Moses, among those who invoked his name was Samuel. They invoked the Lord and he answered.

You are holy, O Lord our God.

To them he spoke in the pillar of cloud. They did his will; they kept the law, which he, the Lord, had given.

You are holy, O Lord our God.

Exalt the Lord our God; bow down before his holy mountain for the Lord our God is holy.

You are holy, O Lord our God.

Alleluia: John 15: 15b
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
15b I call you my friends, says the Lord, for I have made known to you all that the Father has told me.
(15. I shall no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know the master's business; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father).

Gospel : Matthew 13:44‐46

Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field. ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.’

For our reflection today:

These parallel stories highlight two characteristics regarding possession of the Kingdom of God: searching and sacrifice. It is true that the Kingdom of God is offered to all, it is a gift, it is a present, it is a grace, but it does not come on a silver platter: it requires dynamism; it is about searching, journeying, working hard. The attitude of searching is the essential condition for finding. The heart must burn with the desire to reach the valuable good, that is, the Kingdom of God which is made present in the person of Jesus. He is the hidden treasure; he is the pearl of great value. He is the fundamental discovery who can make a decisive change in our lives, filling it with meaning. Faced with the unexpected discovery, both the farmer and the merchant realize that they are facing a unique opportunity which should not be missed; hence, they sell all that they own. Assessing the inestimable value of the treasure leads to a decision that also implies sacrifice, detachment and renunciation. When the treasure and the pearl are discovered, that is, when we have found the Lord, we must not let this discovery become barren, but rather sacrifice everything else in order to acquire it. It is not a question of disdaining the rest but of subordinating them to Jesus, putting him in first place; grace in first place. (Pope Francis, Angelus, 30 July 2017)

Saint Peter Chrysologus

In the 5th century, the capital of the Holy Roman Empire in the West was Ravenna, not Rome. And one of the most distinguished archbishops the See of Ravenna had was St. Peter Chrysologus. He was Bishop of Ravenna from about 433 until his death in 450. The highlights of his bishopric were his flair for preaching, a firm determination, and loyalty to the Church not only in terms of its teaching but its authority as well, all of which stood him in good stead in the face of rampant pagan abuses, including the monophysitism of Eutyches.

Peter shepherded Ravenna with rare zeal, urging his flock to partake of the Eucharist more frequently. He coined his famous quote against the riotous New Year celebrations: "He who amuses himself with Satan cannot rejoice with Christ!" His writings and sermons, some 176 of which are still in existence, contain no great originality of thought yet are sound in doctrine and full of moral applications for daily living. The authenticity of the content in Peter's sermons earned him the title of Doctor of the Church from Pope Benedict XIII in 1729.

St Peter Chrysologus said, "Clothe yourself with the garment of sanctity, gird yourself with the cincture of chastity: let Christ be the covering of your head; let the Cross of Christ be the protection for your face; instill in your breast the sacrament of divine wisdom, let the odor of your prayers always ascend upon high." His attitude towards learning gave substance to his exhortations and made all the difference; his words changed those who listened, and, in time, he came to be called "Chrysologus," i.e., "Golden Worded."

St. Peter Chrysologus, pray that we strive hard and work tirelessly for the Kingdom of God.

dan menyeret aku, tanpa ada yang membebaskan.

Ya Tuhan, Allahku, jika aku bersalah,*

Mazmur 7 II

Perisaiku ialah Allah,*
penyelamat orang yang tulus hati.

Allah itu hakim yang adil,*
amarahNya berkobar setiap hari.

Biar penindas mengasah pedang,*
melenturkan busur dan membidik;

namun bagi diri sendirilah ia menyiapkan senjata maut,*
dan menyalakan anak panahnya.

Ia mengandung kejahatan,*

P: Aku hendak memuji Tuhan setiap waktu.
U: Mulutku tetap menyanyikan pujianNya.

Doa Penutup

Demi Kristus, pengantara kami. Amin.

PENUTUP
P: Marilah memuji Tuhan.
U: Syukur kepada Allah.

Readings from the Bible of the Roman Catholic Church:

First Reading: Exodus 33: 7-11; 34: 5b-9, 28
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 103: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13
Alleluia: John 8: 12
Gospel: John 11: 19-27 or Luke 10: 38-42

First Reading : Exodus 33:7‐11,34:5‐9,28

Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, at some distance from the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who had to consult the Lord would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, all the people would rise. Every man would stand at the door of his tent and watch Moses until he reached the Tent; the pillar of cloud would come down and station itself at the entrance to the Tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. When they saw the pillar of cloud stationed at the entrance to the Tent, all the people would rise and bow low, each at the door of his tent. The Lord would speak with Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would turn back to the camp, but the young man who was his servant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the Tent. And the Lord descended in the form of a cloud, and Moses stood with him there. He called on the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness; for thousands he maintains his kindness, forgives faults, transgression, sin; yet he lets nothing go unchecked, punishing the father’s fault in the sons and in the grandsons to the third and fourth generation.’ And Moses bowed down to the ground at once and worshipped. ‘If I have indeed won your favour, Lord,’ he said, ‘let my Lord come with us, I beg. True, they are a headstrong people, but forgive us our faults and our sins, and adopt us as your heritage.’ Moses stayed there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights, eating and drinking nothing. He inscribed on the tablets the words of the Covenant – the Ten Words.

Responsive Psalm : Psalm 102(103):6‐13

The Lord is compassion and love.

The Lord does deeds of justice, gives judgement for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses and his deeds to Israel’s sons.

The Lord is compassion and love.

The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. His wrath will come to an end; he will not be angry for ever.

The Lord is compassion and love.

He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. For as the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who fear him.

The Lord is compassion and love.

As far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his sons, the Lord has pity on those who fear him.

The Lord is compassion and love.

Alleluia: John 8: 12
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
12 I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.
(12. When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the light of life).
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel : John 11:19‐27

Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

For our reflection today:

Today, Jesus’ revelation also challenges us: we too are called to believe in the resurrection, not as a kind of distant mirage but as an event already present and even now mysteriously at work in our lives.  Yet our faith in the resurrection neither ignores nor masks the very human bewilderment we feel in the face of death.  The Lord Jesus himself, seeing the tears of Lazarus’s sisters and those around them, did not hide his own emotion, but, as the evangelist John adds, himself “began to weep” (Jn 11:35).  Except for sin, he is fully one of us: he too experienced the drama of grief, the bitterness of tears shed for the loss of a loved one. Yet this does not obscure the light of truth radiating from his revelation, of which the resurrection of Lazarus was a great sign. Today, then, the Lord repeats to us: “I am the resurrection and the life” (v. 25). He summons us to take once more the great leap of faith and to enter, even now, into the light of the resurrection. “Whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (v. 26). Once we have made this leap, our way of thinking and seeing things is changed.  The eyes of faith, transcending things visible, see in a certain way invisible realities (cf. Heb 11:27). Everything that happens is then assessed in the light of another dimension, the dimension of eternity. Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

In the quiet village of Bethany, three siblings—Martha, Mary, and Lazarus—welcomed Jesus not just into their home, but into their hearts as well. Their friendship with Christ teaches us the beauty of service, the grace of listening, and the hope of resurrection. On their feast day, may we learn from Martha’s dedication, Mary’s devotion, and Lazarus’s witness to new life, and open our hearts to welcome Jesus as they did.

Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, pray for us.
CONGREGATIO DE CULTU DIVINO ET DISCIPLINA SACRAMENTORUM
 Prot. N. 35/21
DECREE on the Celebration of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus in the General Roman Calendar

In the household of Bethany the Lord Jesus experienced the family spirit and friendship of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, and for this reason the Gospel of John states that he loved them. Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb at the command of the One who humiliated death.
The traditional uncertainty of the Latin Church about the identity of Mary - the Magdalene to whom Christ appeared after his resurrection, the sister of Martha, the sinner whose sins the Lord had forgiven - which resulted in the inclusion of Martha alone on 29 July in the Roman Calendar, has been resolved in recent studies and times, as attested by the current Roman Martyrology, which also commemorates Mary and Lazarus on that day. Moreover, in some particular calendars the three siblings are already celebrated together.
Therefore, the Supreme Pontiff Pope FRANCIS, considering the important evangelical witness they offered in welcoming the Lord Jesus into their home, in listening to him attentively, in believing that he is the resurrection and the life, and accepting the proposal of this Dicastery, has decreed that 29 July be designated in the General Roman Calendar as the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus.
The Memorial must therefore appear under this title in all Calendars and Liturgical Books for the celebration of Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours; the variations and additions to be adopted in the liturgical texts, attached to the present decree, must be translated, approved and, after confirmation by this Dicastery, published by the Episcopal Conferences.
Anything to the contrary notwithstanding.

The love of God gives us strength and comfort

To my beloved brothers and sisters in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

As children of God the Father and believers in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world, let us examine our situation while reflecting on the goodness of God's love in our lives. I invite you all to return to prayer, fasting and abstinence together with all Catholics around the world to ask for mercy and protection from God regarding the events that are happening around the world and in our respective places. The purpose of this prayer and fasting that we do is to ask for grace, guidance from God, His forgiveness, and His Holy Spirit to help us all so that issues involving individuals, families, communities and at the world level achieve solidarity, peace, justice, prosperity, peaceful lives, peace in the heart, peace at home, peace in this world and the re-establishment of the process of peaceful war between countries. We all know events like in Israel, Gaza, and in some places that still want to get justice until war breaks out.

The recent events in our area have received much attention and speculation from certain quarters. Therefore, I would like to invite you all to pray and fast as best you can starting tomorrow, July 29, 2025, which is Tuesday. Prayer is free according to the agreement of each group or groups that exist in the Jesus, Mary, Joseph Ministry of Love (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels). We are encouraged to pray the Holy Rosary, do the Novena prayers from the Official Teachings of our Roman Catholic Church, the prayers found in the spiritual books, and do penance and confession of sins according to our own way of life. In addition, it is necessary for all of us to pray at the Eucharist, do Adoration and personal prayer at the Blessed Sacrament. Other options are free and can be done individually or in our own places such as home, personal retreat or short daily prayers. We ask for grace and forgiveness from God so that our prayers and fasting receive help from God so that our goals and objectives can be continued and our Mission and Vision also bring grace and comfort to all. This prayer and fasting is done for a week only. It is not recommended for those who are sick and have health problems.

For those who want to do more than a week, I advise praying and fasting only for no more than two weeks starting tomorrow. Let us forget for a moment outside entertainment, parties that can lead to drunkenness and carelessness, abstaining and fasting from cigarettes, food, entertainment, excessive partying so that hunger and malnutrition around the world receive public attention, the occurrence of peace throughout the world, peace among all people, the re-establishment of the spirit of brotherhood and humanity among warring countries, justice and solidarity can be achieved, culture and society are always maintained, and issues involving individuals, families, communities or society, especially between parents, educators and children, receive help and protection from God. We all expect God to bless all of our lives. We also need God in this process of prayer, fasting and abstinence as well as the discernment process that we will do. Let us all think again why there is evil and sin all over the world. God is present in all of our prayers. This is my goal and I want us to believe again in God who will give us something from the signs of this time so that the souls we pray for will enter Heaven without sin and evil. (Gospel of Saint John 14:27, Philippians 4:7, Colossians 3:15, Gospel of Saint Matthew 5:9).

(Vangelo secondo Giovanni 14:27, Filippesi 4:7, Colossesi 3:15, Vangelo secondo Matteo 5:9).

May God bless you and your beloved family, Amen.

Deo gratias,
